Malay homestay

We stayed two nights in a local village with a family in their home. We learnt how to play Charion (a board game) and played takraw (kick volleyball). The son from our host family had an awesome kick!

Mt Kinabalu

Mt Kinabalu is the biggest mountain in SE Asia. We didn't climb it but walked around the base. It was misty and cold (not like NZ though) and there was a big variety of flowers.

new friends

I made new friends at Damai Rainforest Resort. Angus and Lucien were on holiday from Singapore. We played on the beach and swam in the natural freshwater pool fed by a stream from the mountain. We went to a seafood restaurant where you can choose your seafood to be cooked the way you like it.

I'm a celebrity

At Miri Airport when we were about the board the plane, some people wanted to take photos of us. I'm famous!!!

Markets

Everywhere you go there are markets selling all types of fesh food, wood carvings and beads. You can even buy toys and pet turtles at the markets.

Iban Longhouse

We went by boat to stay with an Iban tribal family in their longhouse on the river. We used the dart blowpipe to shoot a papaya on a tree. The Iban family performed a ceremonial dance for us at night and we (Mum and Dad) tried their rice wine. We gave the family gifts of salt, pencils, chips, and peanuts as gifts for staying.

monkey got mum's beer!

A cheeky macaque monkey stole Mum's beer at Bako National Park. We stayed overnight here and did a trek to a beautiful beach. The first part of the trek was in rainforest with lots of mossy roots - like New Zealand - and the second part was like Australia+monkeys=Bako.

Rainforest kayaking

We kayaked on a river through Borneo's rainforest. The rocks were amazing shapes with names that represented what they looked like. We went down some rapids, swam in the river and played Tarzan.

Orang Utan Sanctuary

We went to an orang utan rehabilitation centre where they take care of sick and hurt orang utans. Ritchie was the biggest and hairiest orang utan. He was the dominant male and was 1.4m tall and twice as heavy as Dad (Terry)!

Rainforest World Musical Festival

Many people are in Kuching for the Rainforest World Musical Festival. We didn't buy tickets but went to a free concert on the waterfront one night and me and my sister were one of the few who danced to the band.

Kuching's waterfront

Kuching's waterfront is nice to stroll along. We caught a sanpan across the Sarawak river to a local village to have dinner one night.

Temples of Kuching

We are in Kuching, Sarawak, in Borneo, Malaysia. We have done a lot of walking around town and have seen a lot of Chinese temples. I liked the carvings of the dragon and tiger.
